The Girls Impact the World Film Festival is excited to present the "Girls in STEM" Award

Students submit your 3-6 minute film on issues that...
  • CREATE AWARENESS about why so few girls choose to study STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and why so many more men than women choose careers in these fast-growing, high-paying fields. You may want show the experience of a girl (or girls) attending a STEM school and chronicle the challenges she faces.
  • FOCUS ON SOLUTIONS. Find out what it takes to get girls interested in STEM--and helps them hang in there when the going gets tough. Was there a particular class, or mentor, or role model that got her there or helped her get through a challenging time?
Topics may include:
  • Where do you think girls pick up the message that boys are better at math, science, and technology?
  • What messages do girls need to hear? What inspires or encourages them to stick with a career path in a male-dominated field?
  • Why is there still a confidence gap in STEM classrooms? Studies show that girls believe that they are not doing as well as their male classmates even when they actually are.
  • Research shows that mentoring and role models are key to helping girls stay in STEM classes and succeed in these fields. What role has a mentor or role model played in your subject's success?
  • Are things changing for the better as more girls get opportunities to study science, technology, engineering, and math?
