Girls Impact the World Film Festival Call for Entries


The Girls Impact the World Film Festival is now accepting submissions of 3-6 minute short films presented by & Eloise DeJoria.

Film entry deadline January 20, 2019 at 11:59 PM CST. To qualify for Judge's Choice Awards, films must be submitted by January 20, 2019. Other prize categories may have extended deadlines. Please visit individual prize categories on this page to view deadlines:

Videos must EITHER:
(1) Raise awareness about critical issues affecting women and girls around the world OR
(2) Propose solutions to critical challenges faced by women

Applicant(s) must be 25 or under on December 31, 2018 (special circumstances may be considered)
(1) Currently enrolled undergraduates (global) OR
(2) Full-time high school students
(3) The GITW Film Fest Competition is not open to any resident of the following countries: U.S. export regulations prohibit the export of goods and services to Cuba, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. Therefore residents of these countries/regions are not eligible to participate.
(4) Sponsor prizes including Green IS, Honest Beauty & Innovation Prize are chosen by sponsors and may include films directed and produced by graduate students.
(5) Each individual applicant may be involved in the making of up to two films. You may not enter more than two films.

To enter you will need to:
(1) Follow all Film Requirements (see below)
(2) Enter your video on the GITW entry submission page.
(3) Share, share and share your video from the GITW gallery. The more you share, the more likely you will win the People's Choice Award!
(4) Upon becoming a finalist, before being eligible for prizes, you must provide proof of enrollment at your school/university.
(5) That's it, wasn't that easy!

  • Your film should be between 3 and 6 minutes long. (see FAQ for exact length requirements)
  • Your film must contain the provide End Marker still image.
  • Your film can be a (1) narrative, (2) documentary, (3) investigative reporting, (4) music video, (5) animation, or (6) curated film (film collage). Please see the FAQ for more details about film genres and film content.
  • Your film must be created after January 1, 2018.
  • Your film must be your own original work and not infringe any copyright or ownership agreements.
  • You must not premiere your film before entering it on the Girls Impact the World website.
  • You may only be involved with two submitted entries per year.
  • Once you have submitted your video, please share and publicize it through the Girls Impact the World Gallery page. This is intended to help you further the number of facebook likes, tweets and views for the People's Choice Grand Prize.
  • At the end of your film please add a slide that shows at least 2 or more organizations that are working on solutions to the issue area that you address in your short film. You can highlight Connecther projects and/or other organizations. (optional but recommended)


All footage, video graphics/pictures, and audio (including sound bites, music, etc.) MUST be original, unless you have the express written consent of the original owner for use in your work. We will not knowingly accept a movie that contains copyrighted material.

Submitting your film gives Connecther and the Harvard College Social Innovation Collaborative (SIC) permission to screen the work on its websites, with all authors credited appropriately. You also grant Connecther and SIC permission and rights to publish selected screenshots from your work on their websites and in promotional material, and to distribute the film via our networks.

Film contestants warrant that the material is will not violate any law, statute, ordinance or regulation, or infringe on any third party's rights, including, without limitation, any intellectual property rights or rights of publicity or privacy (including user privacy), contain any viruses or be defamatory, libelous, obscene, pornographic or indecent.

Connecther has full discretion in making selections and particularly in instances where film submissions contain profanity, violence, or sexually explicit content.

The Girls Impact the World Film Festival reserves the right to deny any submission at its discretion.

I understand and acknowledge that, if I am under 18 years of age, my parent or guardian must agree to the terms of this Filmmaker/Guardian/Representative Release on my behalf. As a Parent or Guardian of a minor filmmaker if applicable, I understand and acknowledge that I am agreeing to the terms of this Filmmaker/Guardian/Representative Release on behalf of my child or a child for whom I am a legally designated Guardian.

Voting Rules for People's Choice Award

For each video, there is a limit of one (1) vote per person for Facebook and twitter, respectively. In competing for the award, each Entrant certifies full compliance with all rules governing the Contest from initial submission of a film through the time of award. All online voting will be under the supervision of Connecther, whose decisions are final in all matters relating to this Contest. Entrants have a continuing duty to uphold the integrity of the Contest and the voting process to select the awardee. To this end, Entrants are prohibited from taking any action, directly or causing any entity or individual, to distort voting or that has the effect of impairing the integrity of the voting process. Connecther reserves the right to review all votes, and upon discovery of voting practice(s) it determines in its sole discretion to be violation of Contest rules, Connecther may discount any votes it finds unreliable from any affected Entrant's count (voiding of suspicious votes in addition to all other votes associated with offending voter's account), and take action it deems appropriate against an Entrant, including disqualification from Contest, for direct participation or passive encouragement of any activity that unduly benefits Entrant or hinders other Entrant(s) from receiving fair voting consideration in this Contest. Without limitation, the following are identified as strictly prohibited and continue to be monitored through the duration of the Contest:

  • Entries receiving an inordinate number of votes as compared to views (e.g., voter's make vote prior to view, without view, or the portion viewed by subject voter is not reasonable in relation to the full length of the submission)
  • Multiple votes attributed to the same Facebook account-holder and/or twitter account-holder;
  • Votes resulting from use of multiple accounts on either Facebook or Twitter, or both, by same individual or entity account-holder to apply more than one vote;
  • Influence to distort voting by offering prizes or any other inducement directed at prospective voters, whether familiar or unfamiliar, with the Contest;
  • Any automated or artificial voting system (script, macro, or other);
  • Any other offensive conduct indicative of tampering with the voting process identified by Connecther, in its sole and absolute discretion, will be final on Entrant, along with any resulting disqualification or remedial actions Connecther deems necessary or advisable to uphold the integrity of the Contest.

Q: What is Girls Impact the World?

A: Girls Impact the World is a Connecther initiative seeking to raise awareness about and propose solutions to the most pressing issues facing women around the world today. The Girls Impact the World Film Festival is a scholarship opportunity for current high school and undergraduate students with the goal of achieving this aim.

Q: When is my submission due?

May 1st, 2017 - Submission of film entries begins

Q: How is my entry judged?

A: Your film is evaluated on the following criteria on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most impactful
Clarity and impact of message
Creativity in presentation
Feasibility of solution
Most innovative solution
Screenplay / Script
Cinematography / Editing
After the semi-final round of judging, all finalists will be notified via email.

Q: How many people can submit one entry for consideration?

A: Your filmmaking team can be as many people as you would like, provided that every person involved meets the stated eligibility requirements. When you submit your film, you will use one main person of contact (as seen in the entry submission form) for festival organizers to contact.

Q: What if we have both college students and high schoolers working on a film?

A: If a team has both high school students and undergraduates, the team will compete in the undergraduate division.

As you can see, these videos take different approaches to delivering their message, involving text, graphics, music, and footage. The goal of your film is to deliver a meaningful message about women and girls in the world, and we leave it up to your creativity to guide your film composition!

Q: Is there funding available for flights, visas and accommodations for international winners to attend the Harvard premiere?

A: We currently do not have any accommodations for bringing international winners to the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will commemorate all finalists in-person (if they can attend) or remotely via skype and feature a film screening and sponsor award presentations.

Q: Who receives the prize money if more than one person contributes to the film?

A: The prize scholarship money is awarded to the creators of the film. If the film was created by a team, it is awarded equitably per the team's request.

Q: Who retains the copyright/right to distribute the film?

A: While the creators retain artistic ownership over all content, by submitting to the GITW film festival creators relinquish all distribution and circulation rights to Connecther and GITW. For example, if GITW wants to publish the video or show the video at a future event, they may do so freely as may the creators.

Q: Does my film need to be between 3 to 6 minutes to be entered into the GITW film fest?

A: The length of your film should be between 3 to 6 minutes. We realize that your film might be a little longer and/or shorter than anticipated. We have accepted films in the past that are up to 8 minutes long, however, those are few and far between.

Q: I am producing my film for a film class and/or organization that mentors students in the area of film and media. Can I submit my film that was produced under the supervision of my teacher/s?

A: Film class students and students working with media organizations are welcome to submit their films to GITW as long as they meet the GITW requirements!

Q: Is my 30 to 60 second Message of Hope for Malala video eligilbe for the $5K grand prize?

A: The 30 to 60 second Message of Hope for Malala videos are in a different category and are not eligible for the grand prize awards. The prizes for the Message of Hope for Malala videos can be found on the Malala Gallery page.

Upon completion of your film, navigate to starting in September and check out our prompt video. Once you’ve checked that your video meets all the requirements, navigate to the “Comment� box beneath our video and click inside the text area. You will see a link to “provide a video response.� To respond with your video, click "provide a video response" and select your uploaded video from your Youtube channel.
