Girls Impact the World Film Festival Call for Entries

GUIDELINES

The Girls Impact the World Film Festival is now accepting submissions of 3-6 minute short films presented by Connecther.org & Eloise DeJoria.

Film entry deadline January 20, 2019 at 11:59 PM CST. To qualify for Judge's Choice Awards, films must be submitted by January 20, 2019. Other prize categories may have extended deadlines. Please visit individual prize categories on this page to view deadlines:

Girls Impact the World Film Festival Entry Rules

Films must be submitted by the deadline to qualify (January 20, 2019). No late submissions will be accepted.

FILMMAKER REQUIREMENTS: 

Who can enter?

Students enrolled in high school or undergraduate programs are qualified to enter. If chosen as a finalist, filmmakers must provide proof of enrollment at their school/university. (Special circumstances may be considered for youth who are not in school.) Filmmakers must be 25 years old or under by the submission date of January 20, 2019

How many films can I enter?

You may enter up to TWO films as long as they address two separate topics.

What topics can I choose from?

You may choose from a range of topics that address critical issues impacting women and girls. See topics here: https://www.connecther.org/gitw/prizes

Are any countries excluded from participating?

All countries are welcome to participate, however, due to U.S. export regulations, we may have difficulty disbursing scholarship funds if winners are residents of Cuba, North Korea, Sudan, Iran, and/or Syria.

FILM REQUIREMENTS: 

What are the basic requirements for a Girls Impact the World film?

  • Films must be 3 to 6 minutes long.
    - They must focus on a Girls Impact the World topic and/or propose solutions to one critical challenge within that topic.
  • Films must be created after January 1, 2018.
  • Be an original film that does NOT contain copyrighted material.
  • Original work should never be a copy or remake of another film. All Girls Impact the World Film Festival film submission must be original works made entirely by students. That means that scripts and storyboards, directing, cinematography, editing, etc., must be done by students aged 25 and under although teachers and advisers can offer input.
  • Actors and film subjects may be non-students.
  • Powerpoints will not be accepted.

Can I use a film that I have submitted elsewhere?

No. Entries must be original films that have NOT yet been submitted to other film festivals.

What else do I need to include in my film?

If your film contains any graphic content, include a warning near the beginning of the film. ConnectHER has full discretion in accepting or denying films, particularly in instances where film submissions contain profanity, violence, or sexually explicit content.

At the end of your film, please add a slide that lists at least two organizations that are working on solutions to the issue(s) that you address.

SHARE YOUR FILM! Once your film has been approved and placed in the Girls Impact the World Film Festival gallery, share it! A People’s Choice winner will be selected by judges from the top 10 films with the most votes.

Voting Rules for People's Choice Award

For each video, there is a limit of one (1) vote per person for Facebook and Twitter, respectively. In competing for the award, each Entrant certifies full compliance with all rules governing the Contest from initial submission of a film through the time of award.

  • One vote per Facebook or Twitter account
  • No inordinate number of votes compared to views
  • Fair and honest participation without the use of automated systems
  • No prize offerings for participation
  • ConnectHER deems full supervision and control to uphold integrity of the contest.
  • Any other offensive conduct indicative of tampering with the voting process identified by ConnectHER, in its sole and absolute discretion, will be final on Entrant, along with any resulting disqualification or remedial actions ConnectHER deems necessary or advisable to uphold the integrity of the Contest.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: 

Submitting your film gives ConnectHER permission to screen the work on its websites, with all authors credited appropriately. You also grant ConnectHER permission and rights to publish selected screenshots from your work on their websites and in promotional material, and to distribute the film via our networks.

Q: What is Girls Impact the World?

A: Girls Impact the World is a Connecther initiative seeking to raise awareness about and propose solutions to the most pressing issues facing women around the world today. The Girls Impact the World Film Festival is a scholarship opportunity for current high school and undergraduate students with the goal of achieving this aim.

Q: When is my submission due?

May 1st, 2017 - Submission of film entries begins
January 20, 2019 - Film entry deadline 11:59 PM EDT
February 20, 2019 - Finalist judging ends
TBD - Awards Ceremony at Harvard Red Carpet Film Showing

Q: How is my entry judged?

A: Your film is evaluated on the following criteria on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most impactful
Clarity and impact of message
Creativity in presentation
Feasibility of solution
Most innovative solution
Screenplay / Script
Cinematography / Editing
After the semi-final round of judging, all finalists will be notified via email.

Q: How many people can submit one entry for consideration?

A: Your filmmaking team can be as many people as you would like, provided that every person involved meets the stated eligibility requirements. When you submit your film, you will use one main person of contact (as seen in the entry submission form) for festival organizers to contact.

Q: What if we have both college students and high schoolers working on a film?

A: If a team has both high school students and undergraduates, the team will compete in the undergraduate division.

As you can see, these videos take different approaches to delivering their message, involving text, graphics, music, and footage. The goal of your film is to deliver a meaningful message about women and girls in the world, and we leave it up to your creativity to guide your film composition!

Q: Is there funding available for flights, visas and accommodations for international winners to attend the Harvard premiere?

A: We currently do not have any accommodations for bringing international winners to the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will commemorate all finalists in-person (if they can attend) or remotely via skype and feature a film screening and sponsor award presentations.

Q: Who receives the prize money if more than one person contributes to the film?

A: The prize scholarship money is awarded to the creators of the film. If the film was created by a team, it is awarded equitably per the team's request.

Q: Who retains the copyright/right to distribute the film?

A: While the creators retain artistic ownership over all content, by submitting to the GITW film festival creators relinquish all distribution and circulation rights to Connecther and GITW. For example, if GITW wants to publish the video or show the video at a future event, they may do so freely as may the creators.

Q: Does my film need to be between 3 to 6 minutes to be entered into the GITW film fest?

A: The length of your film should be between 3 to 6 minutes. We realize that your film might be a little longer and/or shorter than anticipated. We have accepted films in the past that are up to 8 minutes long, however, those are few and far between.

Q: I am producing my film for a film class and/or organization that mentors students in the area of film and media. Can I submit my film that was produced under the supervision of my teacher/s?

A: Film class students and students working with media organizations are welcome to submit their films to GITW as long as they meet the GITW requirements!

Q: Is my 30 to 60 second Message of Hope for Malala video eligilbe for the $5K grand prize?

A: The 30 to 60 second Message of Hope for Malala videos are in a different category and are not eligible for the grand prize awards. The prizes for the Message of Hope for Malala videos can be found on the Malala Gallery page.

Upon completion of your film, navigate to http://www.youtube.com/user/GirlsImpactTheWorld starting in September and check out our prompt video. Once you’ve checked that your video meets all the requirements, navigate to the “Comment� box beneath our video and click inside the text area. You will see a link to “provide a video response.� To respond with your video, click "provide a video response" and select your uploaded video from your Youtube channel.
