Shining Hope for Communities

We link free schools for girls to holistic community centers that provide residents with the most essential services unavailable elsewhere. In August 2009, we founded The Kibera School for Girls, the first entirely free school for girls in Kibera. The second step of our model provides the community-at-large with tangible benefits through a community center adjacent to the school. The Shining Hope Community Center and Johanna Justin-Jinich Community Clinic provide accessible services to anyone in the community, addressing severe local deficits in health care, education, sanitation, nutrition, and computer/literacy training. By investing in health and economic success through a school for girls, we demonstrate that benefiting women benefits the whole community, cultivating a community ethos that makes women respected members of society.

Kibera School for Girls

Nairobi, Kenya

The Kibera School for Girls, a tuition-free school currently serving 64 students grades pre-K through 2nd grade, plans to follow students through 8th grade. By providing a superior education and healthcare, we are able to give the brightest and most at-risk girls the power of hope and education. Run by a staff of expert female teachers, the school gives students and community-members positive female role models. With your support, we are building a global model of linking tuition free schools for girls to accessible social services for all.

Background

Shining Hope for Communities combats inter-generational cycles of poverty and gender inequity by linking tuition-free schools for girls to essential social services for all. In our innovative, two-step model, women and girls are placed at the center of community development in places of extreme poverty. First, we build tuition-free schools for girls, which give the neediest and brightest girls the education they need to become the engines of economic prosperity and social change for their communities. The second step of our model provides the community-at-large with tangible benefits through integrated social services operating adjacent to the school. These social services include a community health clinic, clean toilet initiative, youth and community education, and economic development.  By investing in health and economic success through a school for girls, we demonstrate that benefitting women benefits the whole community, cultivating a community ethos that makes women respected members of society. The future of women in impoverished and patriarchal environments depends on concrete, integrated links between education and community elevation.
