Little But Mighty, Zahra is First in Her Class!

Four years ago we hired a widow as a cleaner for the Professor Sakena Yacoobi (PSY) Private School #1- Herat.  When she started, we found out that she had a small daughter, Zahra, who was not going to school.  Her mother said, I don’t have the money to send her to school, so we gave her a scholarship and last year her scholarship came from ConnectHer. Scholarships for 35 Afghan Girls

Herat and Kabul, Afghanistan

Afghanistan does not have enough public schools for all children to attend, and even in areas where public schools do exist, they do not offer a high quality education. Creating Hope International is hoping to provide 35 Afghan girls with scholarships to attend a private school in their area, which will provide them with a high quality education and change the course of their life for the better.

Where this project is located

Info about Afghanistan

Afghanistan is in South Central Asia, bordered by Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China. It is approximately 250,000 square miles and has a population of about 30 million people.

Project Milestones

  1. Girls in need will be identified and enrolled in four private schools, two in Herat Province and two in Kabul Province.
  2. The girls will receive a high quality education.
  3. After completing one year of school in 2014, these girls will be able to go on and graduate high school, joining the 12.6% of Afghan women who are literate. Their children will be ten times more likely to attend school. These girls will become women with skills that will help them to earn an income to help their families.

Background

Creating Hope International (CHI) has been supporting projects in Afghanistan since 1996, working with the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) to reach over 11 million Afghans, 70% of whom are women. In that time, AIL worked with Afghan communities to support 335 Learning Centers. AIL begins these centers at the request of the community, and works with the communities to meet their needs.

One of these Centers wanted to become a school educating 1st 12th grade students during the day and women in the village after school. AIL helped the center to become a private school.

This village is proud of their private school. There are 99 students attending the school. Currently every student is asked to pay what they can, but the students come from poor families, leaving them unable to pay.

The funds from this project will be used to support the education of the female students at this school, as well as three other private schools that were begun with assistance and training from CHI and AIL.
