HOPE for Senegal 2015 Goals

Thies, Senegal

Lycee Malick Sy is among the largest high schools in Senegal. It serves over 4,000 urban and rural students. With a 39.3% national literacy rate (29.2% for girls), this project is one that can have great impact. This project has 3 components: 1. Build bathroom facilities for the 4,000+ students at Lycée Malick Sy High School. Preferably, sustainable or compostable toilets. 2. Continue to support the campus sustainable teaching garden. The students run the garden with support from a Peace Corps volunteer. The goal is to use the garden as a teaching tool & eventually have it sustain itself. 3. Provide ongoing training to improve student understanding of web design and technology. These projects are completed in collaboration with local experts and volunteers and have a big impact!

2014 is coming to a close as a success for HOPE for Senegal. Here are the top 10 accomplishments your donations made happen:

1. Fund 25 scholarships for girls
2. Provide computer training for 50 + faculty and students
3. Provide web design training and mentorship for 12 students who will serve as future trainers
4. Get a campus sustainable garden going with help from the Peace Corps and run by Lycée Malick Sy students
5. Support a student lead neighborhood literacy program in the village of Tivouane (this was especially touching- conceived and implemented by high school students, including a Lycée Malick Sy graduate!)
6. Provided a surgical procedure for a student who was unable to walk due to a completely curable (and relatively simply treated) medical condition.
7. Social innovation competition prize money given to a winning student team (who decided to donate half of the money right back to their school English Club!).
8. 3 students travelled to Nairobi in April for training and mentorship.
9. A Texas high school student and HOPE for Senegal volunteer spoke at TEDx UT about engaging youth and how HOPE for Senegal was her connection to giving.
10. Supported a local Austin alumni to return to his Dakar elementary school for the second year in a row to help students at his former school with over $5,000 is school supplies and equipment!
