She is Rising: Help Survivors of Sex Trafficking

Austin, United States

Problem: Approximately 79,000 youth are currently victims of sex trafficking in Texas. Since the state now has the highest rates of child sex trafficking in the U.S., She is Rising is uniquely positioned to connect survivors with the services they need to heal from this devastating abuse and exploitation.

Goal: To help survivors of sex trafficking overcome their trauma, reclaim their worth and become leaders in their community.

Project Milestones

-Survivor Support: She is RisingĀ serves survivors of sex trafficking through our inspiring leadership programs, mentoring, referrals and retreats. With your help, we hope to reach over 100 women and girls in 2017. We believe survivors are worth fighting for.

-Survivor Leadership Council: We launched our Survivor Leadership Council, a group of adult survivors who have become leaders and experts in the movement to end human trafficking. The Council advises non-profits on program design, mentors youth, makes recommendations on policy, and educates the community on strategies for prevention, intervention and aftercare.

We believe survivor voices should be integrated into every aspect of creating solutions to human trafficking and our Council insures that survivor perspectives are heard.

-Texas Petition:
We released a petition to create legislation in Texas that would require that all hotel employees be trained to recognize the signs of human trafficking. The legislation would also require the National Human Trafficking Hotline be made visible in every hotel across the State. We have collected over 76,000 signatures and found a sponsor for our bill. This will help us identify more victims, stop the cycle of exploitation, and connect individuals with the help they need.

Here are some quotes from young survivors of sex trafficking Brooke has mentored:

Thank you for being there for me through everything. You mean a lot to me. You inspire me to do great things. I love you and want you to know you have a special place in my heart.

Kate, 15

You're inspiring to me. If it weren't for you, I would have never been able to make it through my court case. You gave me strength to testify. Because of you, I didn't give up."

Callie, 18

Here are some quotes from women on the Survivor Leadership Council:

Survivor Leadership, the very name gave me pause to look at myself with new eyes...No one ever offered that powerful of a view before...It is important to me to have these opportunities to view myself in a stronger light, helps me to re-frame my thoughts and self doubt. Surrounded by other women who inspire me by owning who they are, helps me to be comfortable in my own skin. Lisa

Survivor leadership to me is like apprenticeship leading to our authentic selves...more than we thought we could be...Because of this journey we can direct, inspire and help others just starting the journey and each other because life is always a work in progress. Survivor leadership is helping those who are, or have been weary, see themselves through our eyes. Anne
