At the Sughar Foundation’s village centers in tribal areas across Pakistan, women learn how to make traditional embroidery for the fashion industry. They gain a marketable skill—and at the same time, learn to read and write and speak out against oppression and violence. Sughar also funds women’s empowerment projects by other organizations in rural Pakistan. Founder Khalida Brohi, who was born in the tribal region of Pakistan, has attracted international recognition, for her work to to end honor killings and empower Pakistani women.
