STRONGHEART is an innovative organization dedicated to bringing together people, ideas, and resources to radically transform individual lives and strengthen the fabric of humanity. The Strongheart Fellows Program facilitates intensive academic and emotional learning, and extraordinary opportunity for young people of exceptional promise from difficult life circumstances such as former child slaves, child soldiers, and survivors of war, poverty, or disaster.

The Strongheart Fellows Program provides exceptional young people from conflict and post-conflict zones with world-class educational opportunities. Through the program, young people scouted from refugee camps or other difficult circumstances are able to make the life-changing leap from the obstacles of their home environments to a myriad of opportunities in the wider world. The parent organization for the Fellows program is The Strongheart Group, an innovative nonprofit providing changemakers from challenging circumstances with the strategy, education, and opportunity to become global influencers and advocates.

Brought together from across the world to live and study together in Austin, Texas, these young Fellows each receive an individualized curriculum based on their needs, strengths, and goals that includes intensive academics, field-of-interest training, critical thinking study, and emotional intelligence learning. If accepted, fellows then travel to complete their studies at world class educational institutions across the U.S.

Project Milestones


The Camps to Campus program session beginning Fall 2013 includes Fellows from Liberia, Palestine, and Afghanistan.  Some of the students they include are:

Benafsha Tasmim
: A remarkable young woman from Afghanistan who pursued her education despite enormous obstacles from the Taliban, she will be attending the prestigious Masters Program of SCHOOL FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAINING in Brattleboro, Vermont. A graduate of Kabul University, she came to Strongheart through her work with the Afghan-based NGO SKATEISTAN and plans to pursue study in management to help women and children in resource-poor areas.

Ba'rah Odey: Bright and passionate, Barah is an athlete with a quick entrepreneurial mind and big plans for business and social change in her home country of Palestine. She will attending Watson University, an innovative program in Boulder, Colorado. She came to Strongheart through the Newmark Scholars prorgam, as part of an affiliation with HOUSE OF TUTORS and Craig Newmark Foundation through their work with PARTNERS FOR A NEW BEGINNING.


Notable Strongheart Fellows include Lovetta Conto, who went on to become a top nominee for the International Children’s Peace Prize, given by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate’s Committee.  Raised in a refugee camp where she fled with her father from the Liberian civil war, she is now a student at Parsons New School of Design in Paris, France.

Strongheart's incredible work has been featured on Oprah, BBC, CNN, NPR and ABC World News. They have received awards and recognition from many organizations, including the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education and The Aspen Institute.

Each Fellow receives extensive hands-on mentoring and guidance as they pursue their education. Strongheart works with each Fellow to find the right school or educational opportunity, apply, and pursue scholarships Additionally, they ensure that each Fellow has what they need to be successful - from living or travel expenses to clothing to personal guidance.  Strongheart Fellows range from high school to post-graduate, attending top educational programs that equip them with the skills and knowledge to achieve a future with a much greater scope than they would otherwise.
