Obsessed with your looks? Here’s why it’s not your fault.
Are you unhappy with your looks? If so, you’re not alone: 56-80% of women and girls, according to various studies, are dissatisfied with their appearance.
It’s no surprise that we feel that way. On social media and in popular culture, we are bombarded with unrealistic images of beauty. Even worse, our culture tells us that our appearance is one of the most important things we have to offer. “It’s a terrible message to send to young women,” says professor of psychology Renee Engeln, “to tell them that something they have so little control over is the thing that’s going to determine their life’s happiness.”
Want to take back your happiness? Watch Savannah Kelley’s 5-minute film How to Survive in a Beauty-Obsessed World, Gem’s Choice Award winner at the ConnectHER Film Festival 2020, and get some ideas! You’ll not only feel happier, you’ll have more time to pursue fulfilling activities like learning, activism, athletics, or art.
Are you inspired to make your own 5-minute film about an issue that impacts women and girls? The submission deadline for the next ConnectHER Film Festival is June 15, 2021. Read the entry rules here.
